Interview with Hilary Duff

Q: Your resume includes a long list of talents: singer, actress, designer, and producer. What inspired you to write young adult books?
A: I really just had the itch for a new challenge. I knew that my main character would be a strong female on a quest or adventure. I naturally wanted to write a script and turn it into a more detailed story. Instead, I decided to write the book first, since it was something I hadn’t done before. I met the right people, and with their help, Elixir was born.

Q: In Elixir, Clea often finds herself the focus of international attention, especially when she is trying to run away from it. Did you draw from your own experiences of growing up in the spotlight?
A: I like to think of Clea as a totally unrelated character, but I guess subconsciously, authors inject pieces of their personality and experiences into the story. In a way, Clea’s challenge of dealing with fame relates to my personal experience and really adds to the story, but it differs in that Clea’s parents were famous, and she wants to break that mold she has been set in.

Hilary Duff is swarmed by photographers as she exits the Byron Tracey Salon after getting her hair done on Tuesday (October 5) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 23-year-old actress even had to be escorted out of the salon by an employee to get past everyone outside waiting for her!

Hilary debuted her darker hairstyle after leaving an appointment at the same salon just last week.

Hil’s novel Elixir will be released in stores on October 12th!

 Meet Hilary in Bal Harbour

Life is good for Hilary Duff. The multi-platinum singer and actress just turned 23, just married hockey player Mike Comrie, just did a spin on “Gossip Girl” and has been tapped by the NBC sitcom “Community” to be its celebrity guest to help juice ratings during the November sweeps. And, reportedly, our former Lizzie McGuire will play a villain. How’s that for acting?

Beyond all that, Duff has just published her first young-adult suspense novel and will greet fans and sign copies of “Elixir” (Simon & Schuster, $17.99) on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at Books & Books, Bal Harbour. The usual celebrity guidelines are in place: Duff will sign copies purchased at Books & Books (pre-order at booksandbooks.com); signature only (no personalized inscriptions); photos may only be taken from the line (opens at 6 p.m.). Duff will sign up to three books.
